New Orleans: The Big Easy

After two weeks in New Orleans, I can't say what my feelings are about it quite yet.
I have to say that the historic, musical, gastronomical and cultural heritage this place has is just mind-blowing. To name some examples, this is where jazz was born, and where the first free slaves were able to buy their own land... not to mention that the whole city is one antique piece: my neighbourhood was founded in 1719!
Last weekend, we were lucky enough to attend Voodoo Fest, one of the three big parties in the city... and it was awesome. In the six hours we spent there we saw eight different bands, and there were dozens more to choose from.
People are really nice (in general, that is), there's a lot of everything, and EVERYONE just takes it easy. They are the real deal when one talks about being laid back and open-minded. Nobody criticizes, nobody cares about your clothes, style, religion, or sexual preference... in New Orleans you just live and let live... I LIKE THAT ASPECT OF NOLA!!!!
It feels like you're in a mix of a bohemian version of Vegas, with the cool French architecture and the small town feel it has to it... it DOES NOT feel like you're in the U.S. at all. I think that's also why it is kind of abandoned by the government and has so many problems!
I'm working here with "Rebuilding Together", and we are rebuilding houses for elderly and disabled people who were victims of the Katrina-related tragedy. The job is very fulfilling and challenging, and most important: we are a part of the solution.

Despues de dos semanas en New Orleans, me es dificil definir mis sentimientos al respecto.
Es importante mencionar que la herencia musical, historica, cultural y gastronomica que tiene este lugar es alucinante. Para citar algunos ejemplos, el jazz nacio aqui y tambien fue el unico lugar donde a los primeros esclavos liberados se les permitio poseer su propia tierra... ni hablar de la antiguedad de la ciudad: mi barrio fue fundado en 1719!
El anterior fin de semana tuvimos la suerte de ir al festival de musica Voodoo Fest, una de las tres grandes fiestas que hay en la ciudad cada ano... y fue algo fantastico. En las seis horas que estuvimos ahi, vimos ocho bandas de las decenas y decenas que habia para escoger.
La gente aqui es, por lo general, super amable, hay de todo tipo de locos y cuerdos, pero lo mejor de todo es que absolutamente TODO EL MUNDO es super relajado. Son las autenticas personas de mente amplia: a nadie le importa criticarte, ni como esta tu ropa o tu pelo o de que religion eres, o cual es tu preferencia sexual. En New Orleans uno vive y deja vivir... ESO ME GUSTA DE NOLA!!!
Se siente como una mezcla de una version bohemia de Las Vegas, con la arquitectura francesa que es tan guapa, y el aire de pueblito que tiene... de hecho NE PARECE LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS!
Creo que tambien por eso es que esta como que abandonada por el gobierno y tiene tantos problemas!
Ahora estoy trabajando con una organizacion llamada "Rebuilding Together", y nosotros recontruimos las casas de ancianos y discapacitados que fueron victimas del desastre que trajo consigo Katrina. El trabajo es un reto muy grande, pero a uno lo llena de satisfaccion... y lo mas importante: somos parte de la solicion.
