In April of this year, I contacted the Hope Foundation, an organization created and run by very talented, proud Cameroonians, and asked them for help finding me a volunteer
ing position in Douala. They did help me, and found a school where I could teach. Our time is Cameroon was incredible. I was teaching advanced level physics at the National Bilingual College of Bonaberi, Douala.Encountering all those amazing teachers and students who love learning and are so knowledge-thirsty was amazing. The fact that these people are the English-speaking oppressed minority was overwhelming but has brought out in me the desire to do something to change their reality. Every day, both their necessity and potential was just overwhelming to me and would make me want to help them in any way I could. At the time, the only way to help them directly was teaching them as well as I could so they would pass the exams that will enable them to apply to a university in Cameroon.
After leaving Douala and saying good-bye to all of my dear students, I have the challenge of finding some kind of way for these intelligent, hard working young people to get scholarships so they can attend a university somewhere outside of Cameroon and have the chance everyone talented should have in life to succeed. En abril de este año me contacte con la Fundacion Hope, una organizacion creada y dirigida por camerunenses talentosos y orgullosos. Les pedi que me ayudarana a encontrar algun lugar donde pueda trabajar como voluntaria y me ayudaron: me encontraron un colegio donde podia dar clases. Nuestra estadia en Camerun fue increible. Estuve enseñando fisica avanzada en el National Bilungual College de Bonaberi, Douala.
Encontrar a todos aquellos profesores y alumnos maravillosos que aman aprender y tienen una sed de saber tan grande fue hermoso. El hecho de que esta gente se encuentra entre la minoria oprimida que habla ingles era casi un tortura para mi, pero sembro en mi el deseo de hacer algo- lo que sea- por cambiar su realidad. Cada dia, tanto la necesidad como el potencial de esta gente era insoportable y sentia la terrible necesidad de ayudarlos en cualquier forma posible. En esos momentos, me consolaba sabiendo que por lo menos enseñandoles lo mejor posible, para que puedan aprobar los examenes que les permitan aplicar a la universidad en su pais, estaba haciendo algo por ellos.
Despues de irnos de Douala y despedirme de todos estos mis queridos alumnos, tengo conmigo el reto de encontrar la manera para que estos jovenes inteligentes y trabajadores consigan becas para ir a la universidad en algun lugar fuera de Camerun, y tengan acceso a la oportunidad que cualquier ser humano talentoso deberia tener de ser exitoso en su vida.
